My State: Virginia

Five Interesting Facts About My State:

1. Jamestown, the first town of the original 13 colonies was established there. It is known as the birthplace of our nation.

2. Eight United States presidents were born in Virginia, six president's wives were born in Viginia, and seven former presidents are buried in Virginia.

3. Patrick Henry gave his "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech at St. John's Chuch in Richmond, Virginia.

4. Virginia has been said to be the "internet capitol of the world."

5. The last battle of the American Revolution was fought in Yorktown, Virginia.

Five Facts That Relate To My Issues:

1. The U.S. has over 200 million guns (gun control)

2. Only six states, as well as the [[Ajenkins#|District of Columbia]] have legallized gay marriages- give marriage licenses to gay couples. (same sex marriages)

3. Neglect and abandonment are the most common forms of domestic animal abuse in the United States. (animal cruelty)

4. There are no [[Ajenkins#|federal laws]] existing that prevent minor access to guns. (gun control)

5. In many circuses and such, wild animals are trained by intimidation and physical abuse. (animal cruelty)

Issue 1- GUN CONTROL

Issue 2- SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

Issue 3- ANIMAL CRUELTY

(1) gun control-

There are about 100,000 people in the United States shot in murders, assaults, suicides, accidents, or by police intervention. Gun control seems to be directly related to crime. An example of this is because most guns used in crimes are actually stolen. Another interesting fact is that only 39 states have laws permitting people with a gun license to carry a concealed gun through the streets. My final point is that 40% of deaths in the United States are attributed to guns. I am not saying that guns kill people, but guns that fall into the wrong hands can be very dangerous. Some way this problem could be fixed is by having some sort of screening test that people must past in order to purchase a gun.

(2) same-sex marriage-

There is a lot of controversy about this topic. There are even anti-gay references in the bible. Currently there are only a very few states that allow same-sex couples to get married. Personally, I feel that it is ridiculous that gay marriages are not permitted in some areas, to me it really doesnt matter because it doesnt affect me. In 1993 the Hawaii supreme court ruled all laws denying any gay couples to marry unconstitutional. I think a solution to this would be to let people do what they want. Two people in love should not be denied the right to get married and share the rest of their lives together.

(3) animal cruelty-

There are way to many dogs and cats in this world. They will never all have a home, so why can't people take care of the pets that they have? For every one human that is born, there are seven cats and dogs born. It is a felony to beat or kill a human so why is it so common for people to beat or kill their pets. Also, neglecting a child is illegal so why do people neglect their pets? Technically it is illegal to beat or neglect an animal but this is almost impossible to enforce. To solve this problem I think there should be some sort of animal abuse shelter (or something along those lines...) in every county in order to enforce this law better.

MY BILL:

Uniforms In Public Schools-

My bill is that I want kids to wear uniforms in public schools. This will decrease the crime rate and bullying rate. Also, this will ensure that families who cannot afford clothes will not be discriminated against. Also, we think that adding uniforms will enhance school preformance and create a more businesslike atmosphere.
